Collegium Marianum

Collegium Marianum

Since its establishment in 1997, Collegium Marianum has focused on interpretation of music of the 17th and 18th centuries with emphasis on Czech and Central European authors. It is one of few professional ensembles of this profile in the Czech Republic and its repertoire includes not only concert pieces but it pays regular attention to scenic projects, too. The ensemble has been led by flutist Jana Semerádová who is a soloist of many renowned European orchestras. Research work of Jana Semerádová as well as her studying of baroque gestures, declamations, and dance, have made it possible to expand the artistic profile of the ensemble from purely musical focus to a junction with baroque dance and theater and it is a prerequisite for unusual dramaturgy of the ensemble with a number of modern premieres of historic music. The ensemble closely cooperates with renowned European conductors, soloists, directors, and choreographers.

Visitors of the Český Krumlov festival will experience a unique project – Dohnal’s interpretation of avant-garde composition Harlequin for solo clarinet by Karlheinz Stockhausen. This piece is currently played just by about four interpreters in the world, as it is exceptionally difficult. It is necessary not only to master the notes but also choreography, facial expression and dance. The young Czech clarinetist proves by his original interpretation of the composition that he is one of the best players but also that he has a great comedy talent.

Broadway Rocks

Dates From - To
10.08.2013   (Sa) 20:30

LaKisha Jones Rob Evan Morgan James Randall Craig Fleischer

Broadway Rocks
rock ballads and songs from famous musicals
Soloists: LaKisha Jones, Rob Evan, Morgan James
Conductor: Randall Craig Fleischer
Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra Olomouc

Popular singers from Broadway will introduce themselves in Český Krumlov again, this time in a project that was recently successfully performed with the National Symphonic Orchestra in Vancouver. Leading soloists include among others LaKisha Jones, Rob Evan and Morgan James.

LaKisha Jones is a rhythm and blues and gospel singer. She grew up in an environment affected by singers such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, or Patti LaBelle, she sang in a church choir. She studied singing at the Michigan State University, then she started her solo career. In 2007, she amazed the USA as one of four finalists of The American Idol. She recently released an album called So Glad I’m Me. She sings at Broadway in musical The Color Purple produced by Oprah Winfrey. In one of her two roles she has in the musical, she changes off famous singer Chaka Khan.

Rob Evan played both main characters of the musical Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway for three straight years. He then traveled around the world with the concert version of the musical – in Seoul, South Korea, for example, he sold out sixteen performances. In 2004, he participated on the acclaimed stage project The Musicals of Andrew Lloyd Weber. He graduated from a university in Georgia. His major was Finance. He was an excellent athlete as a student, too. This singer has already introduced himself to audiences of the Český Krumlov festival – at a concert called Broadway Night.

Morgan James is studied singing at the prestigious Julliard School in New York City. She is a multi-genre singer performing in the famous jazz clubs of New York (Birdland, Joe’s Pap etc.) as well as in Bernstein’s Mass with Baltimore Symphonic Orchetra in Carnegie Hall or at Kennedy Center in Washington. Besides jazz and rhythm’n’blues or gospels, Morgan James sings also soul very well. This music genre attracted world’s attention in 1960’s when it was interpreted by black stars from recording company Motown. It is therefore no wonder that she will perform in a musical inspired by this story, which is now being prepared on Broadway.

This unique orchestral piece consisting of six parts attracts attention of organizers and audiences all around the world. The Queen Symphony was premiered by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on November 11, 2002 in London, attended by former members of Queen: guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, and Freddie Mercury’s mother Jer Bulsara. The composer and conductor, Tolga Kashif, earned standing ovations of a crowd of two thousand spectators. Brian May called Tolga Kashif the best successor of the romantic tradition who however breaks rules of the symphonic form and raises the legacy of Queen to new dimensions. The record of this symphony has been nominated for Classical Brit Awards in the Album of the Year category.
